The United Nations Convention on the Elimination of All forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) has raised serious controversies in Iran and other Islamic countries.

The convention aims at ending the discrimination against women and sets up an agenda for national action to end up such discrimination. The main objective of the convention are-

- To give men and women equality in their legal system.

- Abolish all forms of discriminatory laws, so as to give women equal status as men.

- To establish tribunals and other institutions to protect women against discrimination.

- To ensure elimination of discrimination against women by persons, organizations and enterprises.

But all these objectives are not according to the rules of Islam as women is regarded half of men. They are dominated and discriminated on the name of religion such as right to divorce is absolutely with men, they are not allowed to travel alone, the right to child custody is always with men.
