Lorraine Ali is not any icon figure in West but today she has grown a deep understanding of Islamic society, which she didn’t had earlier. Previously for her the identity of American Muslim women was no more then the timid creature, covered from head to toes, with no voice and no place outside the house.
But as she grew up around secular Muslims in Los Angeles, stayed with the extremely religious relatives in Baghdad and met dozens of Muslim women on travels through middle east, she found that these women argue with men at the dinner table in Baghdad, slap their husbands back on off- color jokes in Egypt and debated boldly on their ideas of democracy on a recent seminar in Arab Women’s Media Conference.
Even then the Muslim women are portrayed as ignorant lambs, which need to be protected and have no individual identity of their own. I personally believe, it is Muslim men who misinterpret religion so as to dominate women.
