Afghan Women

A documentary on a group of American hairstylists training the Afghan women on beauty tips is what the documentary ‘The Beauty Academy of Kabul’ is all about.

The documentary tells how a group of American hair dressers came all the way to Afghanistan, opens up a beauty school to help the Afghan women in the terror stricken extremist Taliban regime.

A line from the movie says:

It’s your job as hairdressers ... to set the new trend for new hair styles, new hair color. If you guys don’t do it, how can Afghanistan change and get into more of a modern-type look?

The documentary is touching enough and the Afghan women taking up Hairdressing as a profession has several disguised connotations.

It is known to all that during the Taliban regime women is not allowed to take up a career in hairdressing: in fact the very concept of fashion was totally washed away by the Taliban’s.

A thing which was dead for long and the resurrection of the issue will of course give rise to many political debates and discussions.

The movie deals with the post-Afghanistan war scenario and the role that Afghan woman plays these days in shaping up the nation.
