Lot of debate is going on these days among the big shot political and religious groups in Pakistan regarding the proposed amendment of the Women’s Bill. A group of 11 human rights organization had appealed for the reformation and it was considered by the government to bring about changes in the laws pertaining to adultery, rape, and property disputes.
The changes proposed by the groups further seek to amend the Dissolution of Marriages Act (1939), Pakistan Penal Code, and the Criminal Code Procedure as well. This reformation will definitely help in safeguarding the interest of the Pakistani women.
However, this step has met with stiff opposition from the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal (MMA), a six-party alliance of some powerful Islamic leaders. When the bill was introduced in the parliament, the MMA members were furious and walked out of the house, staging an open protest.
MMA senior leader Siraj-ul-Haq, reportedly informed BBC, that this amendment is nothing but a trick of the Pakistani government to apply a completely ‘Western Agenda’ to secularise Pakistan.
Haq said to BBC’s Urdu department based in London that:
We reject this amendment bill from Pakistan army headquarters... because it aims at ‘divide and rule’.
Why do not the MMA leaders understand that Pakistan is not only tagged as a terrorist nation but after some time it will also be known as a nation, which kills the women in the name of the disgusting practice of ‘Honor Killings’?
