Women rights has almost become a part of the existential life in Pakistan. Due to the hard and fast rule laid down by the conservative leaders Pakistani women hardly enjoys the freedom granted to them by the constitution.

Nevertheless, in a Parliamentary meeting, President Pervez Muasharraf addressed the members urging them for safeguarding the interest of the women across the nation.

In the speech, the President particularly emphasized on creating awareness among the Pakistani citizens, to try every possible ways for the protection of women’s rights and further stressed that laws made for the progress of women should be in accordance with the holy teachings of the Quarn.

Musharraf said that all the inconsistencies in the laws should be reformed, which is necessary for the development of the Pakistani women as they constitute nearly 50 % of the population of the nation.

Regarding the political debate going on about the Hudood Ordinace, the President stated clearly that all the religious leaders and scholars across the nation anonymously agree for the much-needed changes in the clauses.

However, I doubt that this small change hardly matters, until and unless some major reformation is implemented.

Doing away with four male witnesses that was earlier required to prove the innocence of a women accused of adultery, and instead the requirement of four people to testify in favour of the woman hardly points towards and progressive stage of women’s right.
