After the destruction caused by the October 8 earthquake last year, nearly 73,000 people were displaced in Pakistan. The worst condition was in Balakot town, which had the biggest hit.
To help the quake victims, almost 50 NGOs are working closely, with women relief workers employed in all the quake areas. Nevertheless, the Muslim clerics are taking an offence and accusing the women aid workers of being showing indecency and obscenity. The conservative group of hard-hitting clerics believes that the women folks are not dressing up appropriately and mixing up with male workers, and this is not acceptable according to the religious rules laid down in Islam.
Therefore, the clerics have ordered the local authorities to turn out the entire female aid worker from the quake relief areas. However, they have not yet confirmed whether they are going to take any action if these women were not expelled.
