Woman-bashing apart, a survey has sprung forth some figures that suggest that Pakistan gives a better deal to its women, at least in the political arena. In a surprising revelation, the Inter-Parliamentary Union has put forth some data that gives the Islamic nation 40th ranking in a list of 183 countries in terms of percentage of women legislators in the national parliament. Women legislators account for 21.3% seats in the National Assembly of Pakistan.
This figure gives Pakistan an edge over even several western countries, as far as women’s representation in national legislature is concerned. Incidentally, the neighbouring “largest democracy of the world”, India languishes at 134th position with a meagre 8.3% women legislators in the Parliament.
