Vikaram Seth in his famous travelogue From Heaven’s Lake has given a true depiction of what the people has to go through in their day-to-day life in China.
Today in this context I would like to share what I just happened to come over. In the autonomous region Xingjiang in China, the Chinese authorities has made an official announcement that no government officials, party members, minors and women will be allowed to enter the sacred Mosques. The orders are written in Uyghur language which has caused a concern among the banned people.
The ban is a part of the huge mass campaign launched by the communist party to protest against the resurrection of religious practices.
An Imam who hails from the Heitkar mosque in Kashgar admitted after much persuasion that such a ban is indeed followed. Many Muslims from the Uyghur community has said that Muslim women and certain specific groups are not even allowed to enter the mosque during the major festivals like Eid al-Fitr.
A fine of 5,000 yuan is imposed on those who break the rules.
