Everyone around the world is well aware of the continual honor killings and rape going on in Pakistan. Despite media recording many of the cases, most of the incidents in the rural areas go unreported.
Mukhtaran Mai is one of those courageous females, who even after being subjugated to gang rape and a victim of political parties has survived to make a livelihood of her own and is now working for the needy Pakistani women.
Mai attracted the international media last year when the local media was dissecting every part of her gang rape episode. From human rights organizations to western nations, she gained popularity like wildfire.
The US government invited Mukhtaran to US and the Canadian government even offered her their citizenship. When, President Musharraf on his visit to the UN general Assembly last year was bombarded with straight shotguns regarding the Mai case, he refuted and said that it has almost become an ongoing style statement of the Pakistani women to gain international sympathy.
Despite the indirect insult thrown on her by the nation’s president, Mukhtaran never withdrew back. She continues to help the poor and vulnerable Muslim women of the country who comes to her for her guidance.
President Musharraf might look down upon Mukhtaran as a ’sympathy seeker’, or a ‘fortune hunter’, but according to an international survey, she has created a niche for herself by claiming the position of ‘a women with difference’ along with great personas such as Benazir Bhutto, the former women Prime Minister of Pakistan.
