According to a report published in the January 21, 2006 edition of the Inquirer Newspaper, it claims that the Director of Police, Beatrice M. Sieh had warned strict action against any Muslim women who will be spotted wearing head veil in public places.
This had kicked off a row amongst the Muslim community: but now the Liberia National Police administration says that no such statement was made and the message is purely misinterpreted.
The police department has released a statement saying that it regrets the embarrassment it might have caused to the entire Muslim community. The release further said that the Director had meant to say that large number of terrorist are carrying out illegal activities under the disguise of veils, and those words was not by any means directed towards the Muslim women as an act of humiliation.
Paradoxically, Managing Editor of the paper has denied any such claim made by the Director stating that she regrets for what she said.
