A latest statement made by Ayatollah Morteza Moqtadai, one of the senior most members of the Experts Assembly in Iran might kick off controversy among the extremist religious leaders. According to Ayatollah, women in Iran can easily become a member of the Experts Assembly by running for the election.

The only requirement for the post is that the woman participant should have a degree of highest order of qualification in Islam religion. She should have acquired ‘Ijtihad’ (a person who is empowered with the authority to interpret and frame any laws) or she should be a ‘Mujtahid’ (one who has the highest degree in Islamic teaching).

Otherwise, no one can stop the Iranian women from being selected as a member because there is no law, which prohibits the women from contesting in the election.

However, until date the membership of women in the Assembly has always been a much-debated issue for many years now as the Islamic Republic Constitution still holds a very ambiguous decision on gender discrimination.
