Last week, Iran kicked off the first International Women Polo Tournament. This event was more of a cultural exploration for the foreign teams, as myth, regarding the treatment of women in the Middle East nations is most of the times fabricated and presented before the rest of the world.
Iran women were never allowed to play in the public after the Islamic Revolution of the year 1979 and as matter of fact, this is the first ever time for the Iran women who are openly playing before the public and also in an international tournament. All the women audience although, had to observe their traditional dress code.
The entire experience was worthwhile as amidst the ongoing conflict in Middle East, at least, they were playing a game of love and not of hatred. Despite the foreign nations had to wear headscarves and a bit longer than usual polo shirts, Australia’s captain Jacqueline Hooper said that cloths never created any problem.
The Iranian women’s team lost to Britain team (12-6), but for the players it was a different feeling altogether:
‘Score not important, this game of love is important’.
