The indecisive nature of President Pervez Musharraf’s government is making life difficult for Pakistani women. Despite President Musharraf and Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz’s approval of the latest reformations in the adultery laws, the main hurdle is the firm antagonism in the cabinet itself.

The matter is further taking a U-turn as the influential clergy members and even the ruling party, Pakistani Muslim League (PML) is totally against any such developments.

Many leaders feel that this sudden decision for a women-friendly legislation will have a negative impact on the aged old patriarchal order of the society, which in turn will create unnecessary hassles before the election.

This is not something new to us. Since time immemorial, just to increase the vote banks and to have the political chair within their reach, leaders are always making and breaking new rules.

However, PM Aziz has ordered few selected members of the cabinet to sort out the differences. On the other hand, despite the heavy opposition and clash of ideas between the highly conservatives and the liberals as well as the private party members, two bills are proposed to amend the controversial Hudood Ordinance.
