Forced marriages are a dilemma that still lingers strongly especially in Pakistan and India. We often come across in the news how the British government is fighting to prevent this. And among one of the fighters of this right is a Pakistani woman Hanna Siddiqui who is also a coordinator for a Southall Black Sisters organization. So protective is she about the victims that she flatly refuses requested visits by reporter to the shelters where she dispatches any victim who come for her help.
Hanna Siddiqui says:
We deal with 150 (forced marriage) cases a year, but it’s difficult to say how many cases there are nationwide. A lot of victims don’t come forward.
The maximum cases of Forced Marriages come from Pakistan, Bangladesh and India with some from Africa, the Balkans and the USA, with around 15% of the clients being male.
