Growing Up Female and Muslim, an anylitical newsreport prepared by Samira Gutoc, is about the personal experience and journey of the young Muslim women, who grow up upholding their faith and femininity in the age of modernity.
Gutoc has said that life is a two-fold struggle for Muslim women. Firstly, they struggle against the discrimination they suffer at the hands of their own community and secondly they have to struggle against the Muslim stereotype, when they step out of their own community or tribe.
Though there seems to be dearth of female Muslim role model in the media, Gutoc has not lost hope. She looks forward to the inspiration in the likes of Muslim women activists and cancer survivors Yasmin Busran-Lao of Lanao del Sur, Warina Jukuy of Sulu, and peace-advocate Minang Sharief Dirampatan. These are the women who have shown the way to peace, especially at a time when the Muslims were being blamed for the ongoing worldwide conflict.
