Britain is one of the few countries known for possessing higher civilian ethics and supporting human rights in the best possible way. However, quite shocking it’s to know that here too women are subjected to brutality, sometimes in the name of religion or sometimes in the name of customs. The issue takes a more gruesome turn when it comes to Muslim women.
It’s shameful to say that this brutality is a part of 21st century Britain. Yes! You got it right. No doubt, in the Muslim community, this brutality is prevalent for a long time after it started approximately 2000 years ago. However, one is certainly shocked to know that countries like Britain are also part of it. Here I am talking about a very brutal form of custom called Female Genital Mutilation (FGM)
If you think that FGM is just like male circumcision, in which a small part of thin foreskin is snipped off then you are wrong because it is a surgery of the cruelest kind that involves:
• The removal of the tip of the clitoris, which is very sensitive because it contains the most nerve endings
• Total removal of the clitoris and surrounding labia
• The removal of the clitoris and labia and the sewing up of the vagina, leaving only a small opening for urine and menstrual blood - a process known as infibulations.
Conservative estimates show that 66,000 women and girls living in Britain have been mutilated so far and the practice is still on. It provides a glimpse of the horrific practice, still prevalent in a developed countries like Britain, but the situation is no less than a nightmare in many developing countries. For instance, in around 28 countries in central Africa, it is widely practiced.
Defining it as one of the cruelest surgery, won’t be wrong. However, it’s ironic that instruments normally used for conducting FGM include razor, blade, broken glass, a tin lid and any other sharp-edged glass. In most cases, untrained mid-wives conduct entire procedure, exposing the victim to fatal repercussions like - serious infections, HIV, abscesses and small benign tumors, hemorrhages, shock, clitoral cysts, etc.
The main logic behind such horrendous practice is that it makes women calm and enables her to provide more satisfaction during sexual intercourse. Isn’t it bullshit just, especially at a time when old shackles regarding virginity, abstinence are fast losing their importance? Moreover, such barbaric customs or traditions makes mockery of the very concept of modernization, which we all feel proud of. Isn’t it?

it’s an awful thing w/such chauvinistic views that treats women in such a way that is inhumane. It’s horrible really with the practices of Female genital mutilation and the consequences of it infections,HIV,abscesses,tumors,hemorrhages,shock,clitoral cysts,etcetera just shows the barbarity of such a custom/tradition. It’s a load of shit saying that it’s supposed to make a woman calm and provide more sexual satisfaction during sexual intercourse. How the hell is it suppose to be comfortable for a woman to feel the outcome of it like infections,HIV,abscesses,tumors,hemorrhages and such. Honestly, it’s horrible.
It seems that that there is no place for women in Islam.
1. The Qur’an likens a woman to a field (tilth), to be used by a man as he wills: ”Your women are a tilth for you (to cultivate) so go to your tilth as ye will” (2:223);
2. It declares that a woman’s testimony is worth half that of a man: ”Get two witnesses, out of your own men, and if there are not two men, then a man and two women, such as ye choose, for witnesses, so that if one of them errs, the other can remind her” (2:282);
3. It allows men to marry up to four wives, and have sex with slave girls also: ”If ye fear that ye shall not be able to deal justly with the orphans, marry women of your choice, two or three or four; but if ye fear that ye shall not be able to deal justly (with them), then only one, or (a captive) that your right hands possess, that will be more suitable, to prevent you from doing injustice” (4:3);
4. It rules that a son’s inheritance should be twice the size of that of a daughter: ”Allah (thus) directs you as regards your children’s (inheritance): to the male, a portion equal to that of two females” (4:11);
5. It tells husbands to beat their disobedient wives: ”Men are in charge of women, because Allah hath made the one of them to excel the other, and because they spend of their property (for the support of women). So good women are the obedient, guarding in secret that which Allah hath guarded. As for those from whom ye fear rebellion, admonish them and banish them to beds apart, and scourge them” (4:34).
One thing strikes me as an underlying theme from the little I know about Islam. And that it should repulse anyone with a rational, reasonable mind. The sheer male-oriented nature of the texts, especially as cited above, could never be the sacred words of a God that would be worthy of any respect at all. The liklihood that this is the word of men as opposed to the word of an allpowerful being is overwhelmingly strong. Yet millions blinker themselves into acceptance.
You don’t know nothing about Islam. I am a muslim girl and Islam has given me more freedom then the U.S government. All of you who have commented have been taking ayats(verses) of the Holy Quran out of contects. just because ”Some” muslim men abuse their roles doesn’t mean they’re not going to get punished. P.S Not all Muslims go to heaven. I would appreciate it if you would accually read the whole Quran in it’s entirity and then make your opinionof it instead of ”researching” it online where you bias reports from people who have never TOUCHED or SAW the Quran. Read it and make your own opinions.

it means to marry them, not just have sexual relations with them read the quran. Also,, yes men can have three or four wives but did you read the reasoning behind it? They have to be able to fully support each one equally: each get their own house, their own food,bills, medical expenses paid for,he has to spend the same amount of time with each... men cannot afford this. I only know one brother who has a second wife in all of the muslim communities i have lived and he doesnt even live here.

The reason for this is that in Islam, the son has to take care of the widowed mother or father, and his siblings. We dont place our parents in nursing homes for some strangers to look after and forget about them while we go on with our life... they are part of our life.
