The rocky experience of her past life has snatched the innocence of her face. Her eyes were filled with tears, as she washed her clothes soiled by the incessant flow of urine. Fanta Camara was just five year old when she was genitally mutilated, which damaged the urethra. Due to the repeated infection in her genitals, her growth has been retarded. She has been dropped from the school, because her classmates could not bear the smell of her incontinence. The society which is responsible for her fate now ignores her. With no proper surgery, her condition is deteriorating day by day. With lack of education and no societal life, a bleak future stares in her face.

Camara, is not the only victim of this deadly traditional practice. But there are many more like her in Mali. This practice is performed by the traditional circumcisers, midwives and retired medical personnel. The FGM practised without giving anesthesia can have a devastating after-effect.

In Mali, it is performed on girls ranging from as young as three months to 10-year-old. One could not even imagine the trauma, pain and humiliation which these young girls go through. In fact, many girls die during the cutting process, as it causes excessive bleeding.

The inhuman practice is not a traditional reality to Mali alone; it is practised worldwide, mostly in the Islamic countries. Around 130 million women in the world are the victim of this practice, which means 2 million every year or 6,000 every day. Can you even imagine believing this statistics? But they are a truth and reflect the suffering of so many innocent women, who suffer in the name of tradition.

Female Genital Mutilation is a shame on humanity. It’s an exploitation of childhood in the name of culture and tradition. The followers of this deadly practice have put not only the feminism but also the Creator to shame.
