It is very true that the discussion about the Arab women by the media, intellectuals and feminist, is with good intentions but it is also very true that these discussions have bought into stereotypical depiction if Islamic women. It is due to these very reason readers and viewers regard Arab women as oppressed, shy and always veiled. Most of the non- Muslims are of the belief that theses women do not enjoy any political or social freedom. But it is not at all true.
The best example is Tunisia, where wearing veil is not a compulsion on women. It is at their choice to wear veil or not. Fatema Mernissi is another example of it. She has studied political science in Morocco, France and the U.S. She has published many of the books on the status of the women.
I will not say that the Arab women enjoy all the freedom but then religion is not to be blames for it. It is due to the range of cultural practices responsible for the oppression of women. It is tendency among most Muslim men the Muslim men, particularly clerics, to dominate women on the pretext of religion.
