According to a study carried out by the Liverpool John Moores and Bristol Universities, all the university members are told to go through a drastic measure of re-visiting their mind-set towards the female students of the Muslim community. The research states that a change in the outlook is necessary to boost up an encouraging ambience for the Muslim women.

Over 105 interviews were conducted among the female students, and the result states that the Muslim women were not at all bothered about the cultural diversity, rather the indifferent approach of the University staff, which is making it tough for the progress of the young Muslim students.

Few among the students said that even the ethnic monitoring forms were discriminating as one girl said that the forms do not have any category for the ‘Arab‘. They either have to go for the boxes titled ‘mixed‘ or ‘others‘: this is very much insulting and makes them feel unwanted and dejected.

Yasmin, a 24-year-old-girl even complained of the late hours and the early hour’s lecture, as she feels insecure, and is often verbally abused for dressing in a very orthodox manner. She said:

Early lectures and late lectures were very hard for me because I feel I have to think of my own security and my own safety, and there is a high risk of me being attacked and I face verbal abuse every day.” She attributed the abuse to “looking like a Muslim.

Some other problems include no provision of halal food and unavailability of separate prayer space for women.

The research therefore calls for immediate strategic development from the University staff for favorable institutional facilities that does not discriminate the Muslim women.
