A lot of hue and cry was made by the Muslim religious leaders over the so-called dress code for Sania Mirza. But it goes beyond comprehension as to why there is no voice raised by them against the illiteracy among the Muslim girls or the aginst the dowry demands.
Misplaced priorities
This will not be out of context to say that even today, the emphasis in the Muslim society is more on marrying them early instead of arming them with the weapon of education. Although a number of uncalled-for issues have been raised by the clerics, scholars and politicians, no one has ever bothered to discuss the educational status of a girl child.
Illiteracy being nurtured
In fact, the root cause of illiteracy among the Muslim girls is backwardness of the society. Even in today’s progressive times, apparently there’s unnecessarily too much focus on imparting them religious education and too less on their formal education.
Individual identity denied
According to the conservative Ulemas, the primary duty of the women is to look after her husband’s family. Not only this, she is not permitted even to go outside the house unless accompanied by her husband.
Men, women at par in Islam
Muslim society seems to have forgotten the preachings of the Prophet, according to Whom education is compulsory for both men and women, without allowing gender discrimination to creep in.
